About the role
Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.

You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.
The role is within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.
As a Senior Naval Architect, you will be responsible for the delivery of technical solutions across a wide range of tasks, from concept design studies, new build bid submissions to inclines and test and trials. You will undertake design teams throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design. In addition, develop innovative design solutions and processes for transversals.
You will produce substantiation reports for tasks undertaken including; stability assessment, concept designs etc. Produce technical reports and ensure that, health, safety and environmental requirements are implemented. In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

What do I need to do the role?
You will have demonstrable experience in naval architecture on vessels/marine platforms, demonstrable experience of using ship stability packages, FEA and demonstrable experience of using 2D & 3D CAD packages. You will have experience with working with stakeholders as well as good written and verbal communication skills. Defence shipbuilding related design experience would be an advantage.
Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in naval architecture or marine engineering with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold or working towards Incorporated or Chartered status.
What else do I need to know?
You will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
