About the role
Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.
We are looking to significantly expand our engineering and ship design teams in order to exploit all of these opportunities and so if you are interested in taking your career in an exciting new direction then consider Babcock for your next move.
You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.
The role is within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.
As a Senior Marine/Mechanical Engineer, you are responsible for authoring, reviewing and substantiating Marine and Mechanical designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You are required to contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.
You primary deliverables are substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions; this can include development/analysis and/or verification/validation of Power and Propulsion designs, development of Auxiliary Ship Systems and/or HVAC for existing and new build/concept designs. You will be responsible for preparation and production of substantiation reports for solutions during the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
You will be responsible for liaising with design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of system designs, including supporting design reviews. You will develop innovative design solutions with robust engineering substantiation. Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries. In addition, produce technical reports and other documentation.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to join a team of like-minded Engineers and support on our high profile projects. As well as working for the UK’s leading naval support business, we will also provide you with all the training, support and benefits that you would expect from a global company.
What do I need to do the role?
You will have a high level of developed knowledge, the role is directly accountable for design development, and determines solutions to problems and issues within your specialist subject area.
You will provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development. Although not essential, defence related design experience and demonstrable experience in appropriate analytical software such as FEA, CFD and/or CAD would be an advantage, as would experience of Power and Propulsion systems, Auxiliary Systems and HVAC.
Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered Engineer status.
What else do I need to know?
You will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
