Here at Babcock, our Marine Engineering & Systems (MES) business unit is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK.
The Type 31 Project will deliver 5 general purpose, global, adaptable and exportable frigates to the Royal Navy designed to undertake a range of operational tasks from maritime security, humanitarian aid and disaster relief and defence engagement to operation in a high threat environment. The Project is the pathfinder and cornerstone of the National Shipbuilding Strategy and will be delivered in an innovative manner at pace with all 5 ships to be in-service by Dec 2028.
Who we are looking for?
We have an exciting opportunity to support this high-profile and fast-paced project as a Datum Pack and Configuration Lead. You will have responsibility for day-to-day control and management of the configured account, Registers and Datum Pack. To be effective, it is imperative that the datum pack is always maintained with the latest documentation (drawings, certificates etc.) and is therefore valid.
To achieve this, the implementation of effective configuration control and management is essential. As a key T31 artefacts, the Datum Pack, Registers and SSDD Data Elements underpins all aspects of the functional and physical design, build, acceptance and subsequently In-Service Support for T31.
What will you be doing?
As the Datum Pack and Configuration Lead you will:
- Be accountable to the Supportability IKM Lead for management of the Datum Pack
- Establish the structure and rigor required for the effective configuration control and management of the Datum Pack to ensure the content is invariably in date and valid and correct for each platform’s delivery
- Develop and deliver the asset tree structure and SSDD Data Elements for each platform.
- Develop and deliver the registers for each platform
- As required by the IKM Lead, contribute to the production and development of broader supportability deliverables as defined in the T31 Design and Build contract
- Contribute to Supportability and Design Reviews.
The experience you will bring
You will be Degree or HNC qualified in an engineering discipline (mechanical, marine, electrics/electronics, systems or information systems) or relevant experience. Ideally, you will be a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer working towards Chartered status.
As well as proven experience of Data Management, you will have a working understanding of Supportability Analysis and ILS applications, an understanding of managing ILS data in a LSAR or LIR and the ability to work in a complex, multi-discipline team.
You will have strong written communication skills; the delivery of well structured, unambiguous technical documentation and reports. As well as strong verbal communication skills.
It would be desirable for you to have an understanding of warship systems and equipment or, more specifically, knowledge of RN Warship Datum Packs. However, a background in any military or defence environments would be just as suitable.
You will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
